Bilateral and multilateral cooperation between Ukraine and Ireland in political, economic, consular and other fields, including Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine, as well as ways of counteraction against the Russian aggression were among key issues, which Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin raised at his meetings with Ceann Comhairle, Seán Ó Fearghaíl and Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade of Ireland, Simon Coveney on 28 June 2019.
The Irish side stated its unwavering support to sanctions imposed on Russia, its readiness to stand up for Ukraine in the EU, as well as pointed to a huge potential for developing cooperation with Ukraine, first of all in agriculture, food and IT sectors, pharmaceuticals, cultural exchange between universities etc. It was agreed to dispatch an Irish trade mission to Ukraine to explore further opportunities for developing business ties.
An important role for effective development of bilateral ties will have the decision to open a resident Irish Embassy in Kyiv.
Speaking before members of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence and at the Institute of International and European affairs Pavlo Klimkin focused, in particular on foreign policy priorities of Ukraine, fundamental economic and social transformations in the country, a need to strengthen sanction policy of international community as an effective instrument for containing the Russian aggression, which threatens law and order worldwide etc.
A particular emphasis was made on energy security issues and establishing uniform rules in the European energy sector, as well as on establishing a mechanism of counteraction against possible aggressive actions against one of partners, including on the part of energy supplier.
During the meeting with the Ukrainian community in Ireland the Minister thanked them for their humanitarian and financial support rendered to militaries, hospitals, schools, orphanages etc. in Ukraine in the difficult time, as well as efforts in support of the worldwide campaign aimed at releasing Ukrainian political prisoners of the Kremlin.
